Thinking of decluttering, but not unsure of the first step? Have you ever wondered what you need to start the decluttering process?

Before embarking on any major decluttering journey it is wise to think about what supplies you will need to get the job done as efficiently as possible.

It can be useful to set up an “organising kit” in a bag or box so you have all the supplies you need on hand and so you can take them from room to room as you need.

As you get further through the decluttering process you may realise that you need more supplies that are unique to each area, but here is a list of common items that you may need to access on a day to day basis.

THE CONTENTS OF YOUR “ORGANISING KIT”

Your organising kit may include:

  • Garbage bags,
  • Empty cardboard boxes (or containers if you already have them),
  • Different size zip lock bags (IKEA have the best range if you have access to a store),
  • Permanent markers,
  • Highlighters
  • Scissors,
  • Sticky tape,
  • Notepad and pen,
  • Post it notes,
  • Some clear plastic folder sleeves, manila folders, document pouches or bulldog clips to wrangle stacks of papers,
  • Cleaning supplies such as a rag, a bucket and some soapy water,
  • Rubber gloves

It is never wise to buy organising products like jars, containers or baskets until the decluttering process is completely finished. Every space is different and during the process you might move categories of items from place to place to best fit the flow of your home. Buying organising products for a particular space prematurely can not only cost you more money and time, but it can make organising your belongings much more difficult in the long run. That’s the last thing anyone wants!
